Did you notice the absence of the favorite star icon when you logged into Twitter today? That’s because Twitter announced this morning that they are doing away with the favorite option and replacing it with a new “like” option. The like option will be shown with a red heart instead of the gold star.
In their explanation for the change, Twitter said: “You might like a lot of things, but not everything can be your favorite. The heart is more expressive, enabling you to convey a range of emotions and easily connect with people. And in our tests, we found that people loved it.”
Hearts are already used on the Twitter owned Periscope and will be rolling out for Vine as well making this change universal across Twitter owned social networks.
What does this mean for marketers?
For now, it means a shift in the way we communicate with our audience. Don’t accidentally thank someone for the favorite when they now gave you a like. CEO Jack Dorsey says Twitter will be releasing big things over the next quarters so the change from a favorite to the like feature may have something to do with a bigger initiative that is coming soon.
